Dresden — Looking beyond the watch

[ Project story ]

A series of city photographs from Dresden, taken during my visit to NOMOS in Glashütte. A short step away from the watch, but the same way of looking: light, form and the details most people walk past.

A change of scale

These photographs of Dresden were made during my visit to NOMOS in Glashütte. They sit a little outside the watch projects in this portfolio, but they come from the same curiosity. The subject changes; the attention to light, form and small details remains.

A city offers a very different working space from a studio. There is no single object to organise everything around, and no need for every frame to explain a product. That freedom makes room for quieter observations: the things that become interesting simply because you stop and look.

Following light and form

What interests me is not only the place itself, but the way a photograph can separate one part of it from everything around it. A frame gives a small detail its own context. Something easy to overlook while walking can become the centre of an image.

The connection with watch photography is closer than it first appears. In both cases, I am looking at how forms meet, how light describes a surface and how a composition can make a detail legible. The scale is different, but the visual questions are familiar.

A personal series between projects

Dresden gave me a short step away from the watch without asking me to stop looking carefully. These images are a personal record of that shift, not an attempt to document every part of the city. Their value lies in the individual observations and the way they sit together.

Within the portfolio, the series offers a useful change of pace. It shows the same photographic attention working beyond a commissioned object and leaves space for the less planned side of making pictures: noticing something, choosing a frame and carrying that way of seeing into the next project.
