O&HoraPictor — Colour and depth

[ Project story ]

For O&HoraPictor, I photographed two versions: Yellow Track and Vulcano Gray. Each image is lit to bring out the colour and depth of the dial, together with the details of the case and hands.

Two versions, two impressions

For O&HoraPictor, I photographed Yellow Track and Vulcano Gray. The starting point was the dial: its colour, its depth and the way those qualities can be communicated in a still image. The two versions share a project, but each needs to retain its own character.

Colour is not something I want the photograph to mention only in passing. It is part of how the watch is experienced. The lighting therefore has to do more than make the subject visible; it needs to help the viewer read what makes the dial worth looking at.

Lighting the surface

Each image was lit to bring out the colour and depth of the dial. That requires attention to the relationship between the surface and the forms around it. The case and hands are not separate supporting details: they affect how the dial is framed and understood.

Closer photographs make those relationships more apparent. They let the eye move between the hands, the dial and the edge of the case, while wider views keep the watch recognisable as a complete object. Both scales are useful, and neither needs to carry the entire project alone.

Holding the series together

Presenting Yellow Track and Vulcano Gray in one series creates a balance between difference and continuity. I want the viewer to notice what changes, but also to recognise a shared way of looking. A consistent photographic approach provides that thread without making the two versions feel interchangeable.

The finished selection is centred on that idea: colour with context, detail with a sense of the whole. It is a project about letting the dial lead while keeping the case and hands present, so that the images describe a watch rather than an isolated surface.
